World Cup 2010 Auction - Latest Bids! 2010-05-31

Published on June 1, 2010

Gents,

Here's the latest on the Barbarians 2010 World Cup Aution. A few movers recently -- I am very surprised by the lack of bidding on some of the big countries like Spain, Germany, France and Italy. England clearly is the favourite, at least judging by the bidding. Please keep the bids coming in regardless, and of course feel free to call/email me for an immediate update on current bid levels.

The pot is now up to 2,760 RMB. Everyone can still keep bidding for the above teams in 10 or 50 RMB lots. There are plenty of other decent teams left as well, including Switzerland, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Slovakia, as well as a few real outsiders like Honduras, New Zealand, and Greece.

Anyway, remember, you can email or text me your bid. Keep 'em coming -- the more in the pot, the more the prize money! Here';s the current bidding:

Barbarians World Cup 2010 Auction

Published on May 30, 2010

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am pleased to announce the Barbarians 2010 World Cup Auction competition is now open to all! We've set up an auction system to take bids on each team competing in the World Cup finals. The person who bids the highest for each team will hold the ticket for that team going into the World Cup Finals. Here's the format:

Bidding

Any person can bid for any team. A bid is made when I recieve an email OR a text message including the team name, the bid amount and the sender's details.

You can increase the bid in lots of either 10 RMB or 50 RMB. All bids will be chronologically recorded. I will be in charge of keeping a record of the bids for each team. Once a bid is made it is binding and all payments must be followed through!

Updates

I will update the club via email showing the latest bid levels and the name of the current 'owner' of the each team. I expect to do this several times between now and the bidding deadline.

The first World Cup match is on Friday, June 11; therefore, bidding will close at 11pm on Thursday, June 10. An official listing of winning bids, bid prices and names will be published via email and on the Club website. (To make it fair, as I am the controller...I will not be able to make a bid after 10.58pm on Thursday 10th June).

Prizes

The owner of the eventual World Cup winning team gets the 1st place price. The owner of the losing Finals team gets the 2nd place prize. The owner of the 3rd place playoff winner gets the 3rd place prize. Prizes will be distributed as follows:

  • 1st Prize: 40% of the total bid money
  • 2nd Prize: 30% of the total bid money
  • 3rd prize: 20% of the total bid money

* This is a club fundraiser, so 10% of the bid money will go to the club

** Danger Doyle's have been invited to offer additional prizes too, so hopefully each prize place will get an additional award from them.

It's a straightforward competition, and the bidding stage is a lot of fun. I will try and update everyone as often as possible. DON'T FORGET YOU CAN BID VIA TEXT MESSAGE TOO! Please feel free to call me for an update on the current bid price.

Let the bidding begin!!!

Richard

Hotelscombined.com and the Barbarians

Published on May 17, 2010

hotels-combined-logoDear club members,

I am pleased to announce that the club has secured a sponsorship deal with HotelsCombined. Our new sponsor will make a generous annual donation to the club to help with website upkeep. In return they will place a small banner ad on the website advertising their services. Please use their services wherever possible!

It's a great little deal and shows that there are opportunities like these all over the place. A few more web sponsorship deals like these and the days of 100% club-sponsored match fees will soon arrive!

---

As always, there are people working very hard behind the scenes to make everything run smoothly for the club. In light of this new sponsorship, we are looking for someone to volunteer to take on an exciting and key role within the club - Sponsorship Manager.

The position will include touching base with the club's various sponsors for updates and advance notice on events or news. Once the Sponsorship Manager has a handle on our current memberships, he will work to secure additional sponsorships and help direct the club's overall sponsor strategy.

---

Today, A Team Manager Keith Bradbury is having an interview with a sports magazine about ClubFootball, the organization he works for (and the organizer of the 5s league we play in). In an inspirational and generous thought, he's managed to get the interview done in Danger Doyle's to get some coverage of the Barbarians and our relationship with our main sponsor.

This is something every one of us who hold client meetings for work can do to help the club. Please consider holding your meetings and get-togethers at Danger Doyle’s, where you can use your Barbarian status to enjoy good service and great discounts. With the rooftop opening up, you'll have the perfect venue for both formal and informal meetings this summer!

Thanks, everyone, and please let me know if you’re interested in taking on the role of Sponsorship Manager. Cheers!

The Chairman

Let's Help a Fellow Barbarian!!!

Published on May 30, 2009

Gents,

As you will all probably know by now, David was tragically injured while playing for the All-Stars in an official IFFC game recently. He fractured his knee in three places, and frankly, the injury is 10 times as bad as it sounds. Not only will it mean months in plaster, but also long-term rehabilitation. David will not be able to play football again for as long as 18 months, leaving both the All-Stars and the Barbarians with a gaping whole in midfield.

20090620 david vaughn fundraiser flyerPeople often tell me that the best thing about being a Barbarian is not the football, it is the feeling of belonging to something that is exceptional -- a group of men who are almost like family and who are always there when you need it. It really makes me proud to hear this, even more than all of our success on the pitch. It shows have far we have come as a club over the past six years.

It is therefore with great confidence that I know you will ALL now support David in his time of need, when the chips are down. One of our brothers/companions/fellow Barbarians has been hurt, and it's up to us to now help him out. One of my last jobs as the current Chairman will be to help ensure that we do help David out as much as possible, just as I know the new Chairman will help other players in a similar circumstance -- God forbid anything should happen to them/you in the future (touch wood).

On June 20, the Club will be holding a fundraiser for David to help cover his medical costs. David has no insurance, and the surgery and physiotherapy do not come cheaply. Therefore management felt this was the best area for us to help David out. I know we are holding the End of Season Bash on June 6, and yes, it's not idea timing to have two big events so close together. But we can't choose when a player gets an injury of this magnitude, and certainly no one can blame David for having his knee destroyed by a Frenchman. Frankly, the timing sucks all round: only three games from the end of the season and within spitting distance of our monster End of Season party. But those are the cards we have been dealt, and I still expect you will all support us in our quest to our fellow Barbarian!
