Dis Is Shanghaiiiiii: January 2013 Trip Recap

Published on January 8, 2013

Happy New Year to all! For those who didn't make it on the Barbarian Shanghai Soccer Social, along with those who went but drank too much to remember what happened, our own Tom K. has written what is sure to be an award-winning piece of investigative journalism on this already legendary weekend.

Friday, January 4

After plenty of confusion as to whether we would have enough players (Carlos' visa issues...) and shirts (Carlos...), we all met up at the airport. We were a total of 6 players (Charles, Ravi, Gilbert, Taylor, Tom and myself) with Charles' wife which meant we were 7 to board the plane to Shanghai without any shirts. After having a brief chat with Charles' friends (Freddy Kanoute and Darko Matic who were flying to Kunming), we boarded the plane and landed in Shanghai around 23.00 and got to the hotel around half midnight where we met up with last year's Skipper, Laurence, who had arrived from Hong Kong earlier in the day and had already had a few extra hours of drinking. We stayed in the Holiday Inn out in the sticks, but it was home to Manchester United last year, so we were in good hands. We had a few beers at D7 (the hotel bar) and had an early night looking forward to tomorrow's big game.

Barbarian Shanghai Soccer Social - Coming January 2013!

Published on December 20, 2012

Winter is coming...so what better time to head south for a weekend? With that in mind, we are pleased to announce the Barbarian Shanghai Soccer Social trip in January!

We actually floated the idea a while back, and a good number of you have already signed up. For those who haven't, please note that this is a Barbarians social activity first and foremost. It is meant to be fun and to help us bond as a team.

Charles has done a fantastic job organizing all the logistics, including the flight (at dirt cheap prices), hotel (Man United's exclusive Shanghai digs), bus transport in Shanghai (with real certified drivers), and two friendly matches against Shanghai expat teams.

A big thanks to Charles for his Herculean efforts. And since this trip simply wouldn't be happening without him, Charles will serve as our Chairman, Manager, and Captain, play in his preferred position, and choose the team's formation and tactics for each match. He may choose to sell his titles and powers to the highest bidder, or he may choose to rule like a dictator. In other words, Charles is the boss.

We do have enough confirmed participants to field a full squad of 11, but we definitely have room for more. Even if you're injured or working hard on getting out of shape over the winter, you're still more than welcome -- whenever we're not on the pitch there will be plenty of eating, drinking, and making merry.

If you haven't signed up and still want to go, please contact Carlos ASAP.

Buy Your Very Own Barbarians Shirt!

Published on September 8, 2012

We will be brining our stock of "available to buy" Barbarian shirts to tomorrow's games to give you the chance to purchase your own shirt and squad number before the first league game of the season.

This is your chance to own and wear your own shirt in each game, and then keep it after the season as a souvenir of your days as a Barbarian! We are selling the shirts for RMB 200 each (near cost price), and as they are already printed all money taken tomorrow will go straight into club funds for the greater good of the club.

If you have already bought your shirt, great; if not, please make sure your teammates know about this opportunity. I am just sending this email to all registered players, even though I know a good number of you have already bought a shirt.

The shirts will be sold on a first-come-first-served basis tomorrow. Sven and Chairman John will be in charge and can answer any questions you have about available numbers and sizes.
