Barbarians 5s A Team 2008-11-27

Published on November 27, 2008

The Barbarians All-Stars continued their strong finish, with two more victories in Week 7. After a shaky start to the season, we took 15 points in our final six matches to finish fifth in the final table.

Looking back, 2008 was quite a successful year for the Barbarians in the 5s league. In the final season of 2007, we finished third in Division 3. During 2008, the league expanded from seven to eight divisions. With eight teams in each division, we thus improved from a ranking of 19th out of 56 teams in 2007 to a ranking of 13th out of 64 teams in 2008.

The ClubFootball 5s league has grown remarkably over the past several years and now attracts many strong players. Having four "seasons" per year has allowed some teams that weren't around when the league started -- Afrika Reds in our own division, for example -- to work their way into the top divisions. Just holding one’s position season after season is an accomplishment in and of itself, and we should be proud of our accomplishment.

Looking ahead to the Early Spring 2009 season, things are only going to be more difficult, as two former Division 1 champions -- Spitfire BFC (early spring 2008 champions) and Napolimania (late autumn 2008 champions) -- have been relegated and will join us in Division 2.

Finally, stay tuned for details about ClubFootball’s Winter Indoor 4s tournament, expected to be held in January and February.
