Barbarians B 4-0 Thumb Korea 2008-03-25

Published on March 25, 2008

The game started well, with the Barbarians taking the upper hand. Phil Heggli -- recently back from a tour of Bangladesh -- was drafted into defence. It was his quick free kick from deep in our own half that put Claudius Hildebrand through on goal for the opener. 1-0 Barbarians. Andrew Evans, marauding on the left wing, provided the second with a clean, clinical strike. 2-0 Barbarians. The first of our tough-tackling anchormen to score was Samy, charging through the defence and beating the keeper to the ball. He finished with a delicate chip then clattered with the keeper. 3-0 Barbarians.

The halftime talk was focused on defending well and keeping the clean sheet. In the second half, we contined to be solid at the back but failed to retain the ball well in midfield and attack. Too much running with the ball and searching for that one killer pass meant that, more often than not, we lost possession. The result was that we saw only a handful of clear chances on goal. We need to get this right for the upcoming fixtures, boys!

One of our few attacking chances in the second half did find its way home, however. Albert Boada stepped spotted the keeper off his line and chipped one that squeezed over the goalie's outstretched hands and just under the crossbar. Good vision and great execution! 4-0 Barbarians. Albert's domination of midfield both aerially and on the deck, plus his first goal in a Barbarians' shirt, made him a shoe-in for this week's Man of the Match award.

Altogether a convincing victory that gives us a +2 goal difference on the season. Ahead we face a string of tough opposition, including second and third in the league and close rivals K-Y FC. If we can continue to improve and secure similar results in these games, we will claw our way slowly up the table.
