Barbarians B Destroy King World - Match Report 16.10.11

Score: Barbarians B (7) - King World (0)

On the 16th of October the Beijing Barbarians B took on King World at Chaoyang Stadium for their third league game of the season. After easily disposing of the Dragons 5-1 in the previous game, confidence was high and the Barbarians were looking for another three points. This was to be Shuang Mu's last game for the Barbarians as Shuang will be moving back to his hometown. The game started off with only 10 regular players available as traffic seems to have been particularly bad on this day in Beijing and several players did not manage to get there on time for kick-off. The starting line up for the Barbarians B team was Shaw Chen as GK, with Ryan Stockdale, Paul Ciempka, Greg Williams and Tomasz Zielinski in Defence. In midfield Alex Woo, Henry George Green, Marcio Delgado and Shuang Mu started the game with Chris Sharpe and David Mejia playing in attack. See all the details after the break...

The game started off with King World playing the ball around in their defensive half but after only 5 minutes a beautiful pin point thru-pass by the Barbarians Left-back Tomasz Zielinski was met by Alex Woo who only had the goalkeeper to beat and calmly slotted it past him for the 1-0 lead. Only 10 minutes later Alex Woo was coming down the left wing and struck a beautiful cross into the box where striker Chris Sharpe perfectly controlled the ball only to narrowly miss the goal with his subsequent shot. The pressure was being piled on with Henri George Green's free kick from outside the box just skimming over the bar a few minutes later. After 20 minutes King World had their first chance by putting a free kick well wide of the goal. A few minutes later King World repeated the trick, only this time blasting the free kick straight into the well-placed Barbarians wall.

After 28 minutes a beautiful Henry George Green run through the middle and an even better through pass beat the offside trap and met Alex Woo who again put the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper to increase the score to 2-0. In the 35th minute King World put a cross into the box where their striker controlled the ball at the far corner only for Alex Woo to block the shot. Although goalkeeper Shaw had the shot covered it was impressive to see Alex Woo's effort on both ends of the pitch.

After 36 minutes the Barbarians executed their first substitution with Nathan Dilliway coming on for Shuang. Nathan dillydallied on his way getting to the game getting lost in Beijing's maze of highways but wasted no time finding his way on the pitch by immediately hammering a free kick into the right corner of the goal leaving the goalkeeper with no chance and putting the Barbarians up 3-0.

This was the result at halftime. The line up for second half was the same as the first half had finished. And for the first 10 minutes King World did not manage to get out of their own half with the Barbarians piling on the pressure as demanded by Manager Paul Ciempka at half time.

Chance after chance went begging, with David Mejia's shot being saved by the opposition keeper, Nathan just missing the goal from a corner kick, Henry George coming close to putting one in as well and Paul putting the ball just wide with a powerful shot. Everybody was having a go and it appeared King World had given up. In the 55th minute Shuang came back on for Alex Woo and immediately afterwards the Barbars showed some beautiful combination football with David, Henry George and Chris combining smoothly to finish off the move with a crisp finish putting the Barbarians up 4-0.

Only a few minutes later there was some fancy Brazilian football from our Venezuelan Striker for the Day David who fooled everybody with a perfect back heel that was picked up by Chris to slam it into the back of the net and increase the score to 5-0. It was time for another substitution with the introduction of Sebastian Barge for Greg.

In the 67th minute Tomasz received a Yellow card for chopping down a King World player. A good and required foul as the attacker would have been clean through onto goal. This led to a sequence of fouls from the Barbarians by David, Seb, Ryan and Marcio slowing down the game down and further frustrating the opposition. It seemed like the Barbarians were getting tired of scoring and wanted to live up to their team name. Naturally, Nathan didn't want to be left out and got into the action by picking up his customary Yellow Card.

In the 79th minute the Barbars went back to scoring and Shuang gave the team his going away present, a beautiful goal to put the Barbarians up 6-0.

The 80th minute brought two more substitutions with Alex Woo on for Chris Sharpe (both on 2 goals!) and Greg coming on for David. These changes almost paid immediate dividends with Greg's shot being saved by the keeper.

Getting a taste of goal Greg wasn't going to let off and it was left to him to finish the scoring for the day (although he did mention he was going to get a ‘massage' later in the evening) with a powerful rocket into the back of the net that didn't leave the keeper with a prayer of a chance. Some beautiful build-up play by Nathan and Henry George lead up to that chance with Henry George picking up yet another assist with a beautiful through pass.

Sadly, this seemed to be too much humiliation for the King World players who felt aggrieved by this last goal, since they thought it was offside. They started harassing the linesman quite viciously, which lead the referee to abandon the game. With both teams walking off the pitch a few players from King World started going after the referees, insulting them and threatening physical violence, even picking up a spectators chair from the sidelines. They also started insulting the Barbarians players. The King World hooligans, probably frustrated by their own incompetence at playing football started changing the object of their misplaced anger (it should have been at their own performance) from the referee towards the opposition and were held back by a few more sensible teammates of theirs and some courageous spectators. A ridiculous way to finish the game and a shame the match could not be finished, as the way things were going surely Ryan, Tomasz, Marcio and even Shaw would have scored one each in the last 5 minutes.

Nonetheless, this disgusting behaviour could not detract from the magnificent performance the Beijing Barbarians B delivered, with a tremendous team performance. It would be unfair to pick out any individuals for particular praise for this game but the Man Of the Match award went to Shuang, for finishing his long Beijing Barbarians B career with an excellent performance and topping it of with a peach of a goal. We wish him all the best for the future.
